Sandy Hill Housing Co-operative (SHHC) is home to 100 residents in 62 houses and apartments. We have been a vital affordable housing option in this historic Ottawa neighbourhood since 1984. As a non-profit, self-funded co-operative, our residents are our members – we maintain and govern the place ourselves. We are an active part of the Sandy Hill community. Many of us are affiliated with neighbouring University of Ottawa, from whom we lease the property. We believe preserving and creating affordable housing is key to solving the housing crisis.
SHHC is situated on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples.
Our uncertain future
In March 2023, the University of Ottawa told us that it will extend our current lease until July 31, 2028, with no further renewal. This means our Co-op has five years left on our current property.
With affordable housing options decreasing around Ottawa, home ownership increasingly out of reach, skyrocketing rents, our value and future are more critical than ever.
We believe preserving and creating affordable housing like co-ops is key to solving the housing crisis.
We want SHHC to thrive and to offer affordable housing for years to come … even if it’s not in Sandy Hill.
